FAN Failure Follow
Procedure:
Please boot up to the ACCTON-DIAG for troubleshooting.
1.1 Check the system LED light of the FAN.
The following figure is the system LED light location for AS5916-54XL, AS5916-54XKS.
The following figure is the system LED light location for AS7816-64X.
The following figure is the LED light definition of the system FAN.
Caution: This is the LED light definition of ACCTON-DIAG.
The LED behavior may be different on other NOS.
Please consult the NOS vendor.
1.2 Check the LED status on the FAN module.
If the LED of the FAN module is green, it's no problem. (PASS)
If the LED of the FAN module is red or amber, it's the problem. (FAIL)
If your LED of the FAN is red or amber, you can send the unit back for RMA repair service directly.
1.3 Identify the FAN number.
Basically, the FAN number is marked on the chassis.
The following figure is an AS5916-54XL and AS5916-54XKS schematic diagram of FANs.
The following figure is an AS7816-64X schematic diagram of the fan.
1.4 Execute fanmod fan speed Test on ACCTON-DIAG
For AS5916-54XL and AS5916-54XKS.
The switch has two airflows, one is the front to back another one is back to front.
There are two ways to identify the airflows of the switch.
The first way is the check the model name.
Login to the ONIE then executes onie-syseeprom to check.
Use the following log to example and check the product name.
The product name is 5916-54XL-O-AC-F, -F is front to back.
In other words, if show the -B, it is back to front.
ONIE:/ # onie-syseeprom

Checksum is valid.
The second way is the check the fan module of the lever color.
The fan module of the red lever is front to back.
The fan module of the blue lever is back to front.
So please check the airflows first then can execute the correct command.
Example: PASS on AS5916-54XL and AS5916-54XKS.

For AS7816-64X, ACCON Diag will detect the airflow automatically. So, not necessary to check the airflows before running the Diag.
Example: PASS on AS7816-64X.
This command on AS7816-64X will detect the airflow automatically.

2.1 FAN noise due to high RPM.
- For AS7816-64X:
AS7816-64X does not support BMC module. Thus the FAN speed is controlled by NOS.
Fan sound pressure level(dBA) and test setup from environment test as below form.
Since the fan is controlled by NOS, you may execute the relative command about fan status from your NOS to check the current duty cycle.
The following form is the correlation between speed and duty cycle, a fan tray contains two fan units, front and rear.
Note: Reasonable numbers within ± 10%
When you get the current fan duty cycle, you may refer to the sound pressure level and test with "decibel meter" to see if the noise is normal or not.
If you still have any concerns, boot into Accton_diag to check the fan function we mentioned above.
- For AS5916-54XL/XKS:
AS5916-54XKS and AS5916-54XL support BMC module. Thus, the FAN speed is controlled by BMC followed by temperature policy.
Fan sound pressure level(dBA) and test setup from environment test as below form.
For AS5916-54XKS and AS5916-54XL, if fan noise due to high RPM, please check the BMC version.
Thermal policy is supported in BMC version 0.4F and above, if your BMC version is lower than 0.4F, update the BMC first.
How to upgrade BMC version via web management?
How to check the current FAN speed? Execute the following command in ONIE.
#ipmitool raw 0x34 0x14 //check fan speed
00 05 64 00 00 05 64 00 00 05 64 00 00 05 64 00
00 05 64 00 00 05 64 00ff ff 64 00 ff ff 64 00ff ff 64 00 ff ff 64 00 ff ff 64 00 ff ff 64 003f
For exmaple,
00 05 64 00 = fan1, the second number is PWM value = 05, (PWM + 1) * 6.25% = currently fan duty cycle(37.5%).
00 05 64 00 = fan2, the second number is PWM value = 05, (PWM + 1) * 6.25% = currently fan duty cycle(37.5%).
....
00 05 64 00 = fan6, the second number is PWM value= 05, (PWM + 1) * 6.25% = currently fan duty cycle(37.5%).
When you get the current fan speed(%), you may refer to the sound pressure level and test with "decibel meter" to see if the noise is normal or not.
If you still have any concerns, boot into Accton_diag to check the fan function we mentioned above.
